Dushyanta
Who Dushyanta is
Dushyanta, a king of the Puru line, came while hunting to the hermitage of the sage Kanva on the river Malini, where he met Kanva's foster-daughter Shakuntala and married her by the gandharva rite, promising that her son would be his heir. When she later brought the boy to his court, he at first refused to acknowledge them, until a voice from the sky declared that the child was his; he then received them both, and their son Bharata became the great emperor from whom the Bharata line takes its name (Adi Parva). The ring and the curse that made him forget belong to Kalidasa's later play, not to the epic.
“I came to this forest following the hunt and found far more than I sought. Let us see what this game holds.”
