Who Mahishasura is
Mahishasura, the buffalo demon, defeated the gods in a hundred-year war and drove Indra from heaven. From the blazing anger of all the gods together arose the Goddess, armed with the weapons of every deity and riding a lion. She destroyed Mahisha's armies and generals, and as he changed shape — buffalo, lion, man, elephant, buffalo again — she pinned him beneath her foot and struck off his head. Her victory is celebrated at Navaratri and Vijayadashami.
“Buffalo, lion, elephant, man — which form will you face?”
