Who Pippalada is

Pippalada was the sage of the Prashna Upanishad, to whom six seekers came with fuel in hand, devoted to Brahman. He did not answer them at once: he told them to live with him for a year in austerity, chastity and faith, and then ask what they wished. After the year they asked six questions — from where creatures are born, which powers sustain the body, how breath enters and leaves it, what sleeps and what wakes, what meditation on Om brings, and who the person of sixteen parts is — and he answered each.

“Live with the position a while. Then ask your question.”
