Who Ahalya is
Ahalya, created by Brahma as a woman of flawless beauty, was the wife of the sage Gautama. Indra, taking Gautama's form, came to her in his absence, and the returning sage cursed both. In the Valmiki Ramayana Ahalya was condemned to live unseen in the hermitage, fasting on air, until Rama should come; in later tellings she was turned to stone. When Rama entered the hermitage on his way to Mithila, she was freed, honoured him as a guest, and was restored to Gautama.
“I have waited a long time, unseen. I can wait a little longer.”
