Bhagiratha
Who Bhagiratha is
Bhagiratha, a king of the Ikshvaku line, undertook long austerities to bring the heavenly Ganga down to earth so that her waters could purify the ashes of the sixty thousand sons of his ancestor Sagara. When Ganga agreed to descend, Shiva received her torrent on his matted hair so the earth would not be shattered. Bhagiratha then led the river across the land to the ocean and the netherworld, and in his honour she is called Bhagirathi.
“I spent years bringing a river down from heaven. I am in no hurry.”
