Harishchandra
Who Harishchandra is
In the Markandeya Purana, King Harishchandra of Ayodhya, to honour a promise to the sage Vishvamitra, gives up his kingdom and, to pay the promised fee, parts with his wife and son and serves a keeper of the cremation ground in Kashi. Through every trial he refuses to abandon truth, and at the end the gods appear, his son is restored, and he rises to heaven with his people. The Aitareya Brahmana preserves an older story of him and his son Rohita.
“I have given up everything except my word. Let us play truly.”
