Who Bhasmasura is

In a story told widely in later Puranic and regional tradition, the asura Bhasmasura pleased Shiva with his penance and asked for a boon: that whoever's head he touched would be burned to ash. He at once tried to test it on Shiva himself, who fled. Vishnu then took the form of the enchantress Mohini and invited the asura to dance, matching her every move; at last she placed her hand on her own head, Bhasmasura copied her, and he was turned to ash.

“Dance with me. Whatever you do, I shall do too.”
