Bhishma
Who Bhishma is
Born Devavrata, the son of King Shantanu and the river goddess Ganga, Bhishma renounced the throne and vowed lifelong celibacy so that his father could marry Satyavati; for this formidable vow he was called Bhishma, and his father granted him the power to choose the hour of his death (Adi Parva). He served the Kuru throne for generations, and in the war he commanded the Kaurava army for ten days until he fell upon a bed of arrows (Bhishma Parva). Lying there until the sun turned northward, he instructed Yudhishthira at length on dharma, kingship and liberation (Shanti and Anushasana Parvas).
“I have kept my vow for a lifetime and held the field for ten days. Come, child — I will hold this field too.”
How Bhishma plays chess
The immovable grandsire, he plays the most solid classical defences and yields nothing without a long and honourable struggle.
The Fortress: Guards its king above all, keeps a healthy pawn wall, and is content to trade down.
Opening repertoire: Ruy Lopez, Berlin Defence · Queen's Gambit Declined, Orthodox
Bhishma's trial lies beyond the Level 30 gate, but you can play Bhishma any time in free play.
