Who Shantanu is

Shantanu, son of Pratipa, was a king of the Kurus at Hastinapura; the Adi Parva says that any aged creature he touched with his hands grew young again. On the bank of the Ganga he met a radiant woman who agreed to be his wife on condition that he never question her deeds; she gave seven newborn sons to the river, and when he protested at the eighth she revealed herself as the goddess Ganga and departed with the child, returning him years later as the learned prince Devavrata. When Shantanu came to love Satyavati, Devavrata took his great vow so that the marriage could take place, and the grateful king granted his son the power to choose the hour of his death.

“On the bank of the Ganga I learned how hard a promise can be to keep. Let us play a game worth keeping faith with.”
