Gautama Maharishi
Who Gautama Maharishi is
Gautama was a great sage, one of the seven seers in later tradition, who lived in a hermitage near Mithila with his wife Ahalya. When he returned to find Indra leaving his hermitage in his own form, he cursed Indra and cursed Ahalya to a long penance. He withdrew to the Himalaya for austerities, and when Rama's visit freed Ahalya, Gautama returned and lived with her again, honouring Rama.
