Who Janaka is

Janaka, king of Videha, appears in the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad as a royal patron of learning who offered a thousand cows with gold fastened to their horns to the wisest of the Brahmins, and who received the teaching of the Self from Yajnavalkya. In the Valmiki Ramayana a king Janaka of Mithila, elder brother of Kushadhvaja, is the father of Sita, whom he found in a furrow while ploughing a field, and the keeper of the great bow that Rama bent; the Puranic genealogies, such as the Bhagavata, give this king the name Siradhvaja. Tradition honours the Janakas as rajarshis, kings who lived as sages amid the duties of rule.

“A king may hold a kingdom without being held by it. Let us see whether you can hold your pieces so lightly.”
