Mahabali
Who Mahabali is
Mahabali, son of Virochana and grandson of Prahlada, was a generous and powerful king of the asuras who, guided by his preceptor Shukracharya, won sovereignty over the three worlds. When Vishnu came to his sacrifice as the dwarf Vamana and asked for three steps of land, Bali kept his word even after Shukracharya warned him who the young brahmin was. Honoured for keeping that promise, he was given the realm of Sutala to rule. In Kerala, the Onam festival celebrates his yearly return, a living regional tradition rather than part of the Purana's account.
“Ask, and I will give. But on this board, you must earn what you take.”
