Who Maricha is
Maricha, son of the yakshi Tataka, was struck by Rama's arrow while disrupting the sacrifice of Vishvamitra and was hurled far out over the ocean. Years later, in the Aranya Kanda, he urged Ravana not to provoke Rama and warned him plainly of the danger. Compelled by Ravana's threats, he took the form of a golden deer with jewelled markings near Panchavati and drew Rama away from Sita's side.
“Look closely at whatever shines on this board. Not every golden thing is what it seems.”
