Sumantra
Who Sumantra is
Sumantra was the charioteer and trusted minister of King Dasharatha of Ayodhya. In the Bala Kanda he recalls to the king an old prophecy of the sage Sanatkumara and so persuades him to invite the sage Rishyashringa, whose rites brought Dasharatha his sons. In the Ayodhya Kanda, with a heavy heart, he drove Rama, Sita and Lakshmana out of the city into exile as far as the Ganga at Shringaverapura, and on returning alone with the empty chariot he carried their parting words to the grieving king.
“I have driven kings and princes along every road of Kosala. Take your seat; I know this road well.”
