Pururavas
Who Pururavas is
Pururavas, son of Ila, was an early king of the lunar line. Rig Veda 10.95 preserves his anguished dialogue with the apsara Urvashi, who had left him, and the Shatapatha Brahmana tells the fuller story: she lived with him on a condition that was broken, vanished, and was found again at a lotus lake among her companions in the form of water birds; from the Gandharvas he then received the sacred fire, which he kindled as the threefold fire of sacrifice. The Adi Parva of the Mahabharata remembers him as a powerful ruler, ancestor of Nahusha and Yayati, whose pride toward the brahmanas brought about his fall.
“I once searched the whole earth for one I had lost, and found her at a lake among the swans. I will search this board as long.”
