Who Satyakama Jabala is

When Satyakama asked his mother Jabala about his lineage, she told him she did not know it, and he repeated her words exactly to the teacher Gautama Haridrumata. Moved by his honesty, Gautama accepted him as a student and sent him to tend four hundred lean cows, which he would not bring back until they had become a thousand. In the forest a bull, a fire, a swan and a diver-bird taught him about Brahman, and he later became a teacher himself, instructing Upakosala.

“I can only tell you the truth about myself: I am still learning. Let us play honestly.”
