Who Shakuntala is

Shakuntala, daughter of Vishvamitra and the apsara Menaka, was left as a baby by the river Malini, sheltered by birds, and raised by the sage Kanva. King Dushyanta met her at the hermitage and married her by the gandharva rite. When she came to his court with their son, he refused to acknowledge her — in the Mahabharata out of fear of gossip, in Kalidasa's drama because of a sage's curse and a lost ring — until a voice from heaven declared the truth. Their son Bharata became a great emperor.

“I will not be forgotten or dismissed. Play me with respect.”
