Virochana
Who Virochana is
Virochana, son of Prahlada and father of Mahabali, went with Indra to learn the nature of the Self from Prajapati, and both lived as students for thirty-two years. Prajapati first told them to look at their reflections in water. Virochana went away satisfied that the body is the Self, and taught that to the asuras; Indra doubted, returned again and again, and after a hundred and one years learned that the Self is beyond the body. The Upanishad tells the story as a lesson in not stopping at the first answer.
“I have learned enough. The answer is plain to see.”
