Who Ashwatthama is

The son of Drona and Kripi, Ashwatthama was named for the horse-like cry he gave at birth, and he learned the whole science of arms from his father. A formidable warrior throughout the Kurukshetra war, he was appointed the last commander of the Kaurava army by the fallen Duryodhana. The Sauptika Parva soberly records his night attack on the Pandava camp, his release of the Brahmashira weapon, and his surrender of the jewel he wore on his brow, after which Krishna declared that he would wander the earth for three thousand years.

“My father taught me every weapon, and I have never set one down. Stand ready; the night is long.”

How Ashwatthama plays chess

Relentless and dangerous in the dark, he fights on in positions others would resign and turns every quiet moment into a sudden assault.

The Trickster: Keeps pieces on and the position tangled, hunting for tricks in every line.

Opening repertoire: King's Indian Defence · Sicilian Defence, Najdorf
