Bharata
Who Bharata is
Bharata, son of Dasharatha and Kaikeyi, was away at his grandfather's court when his mother won the boons that sent Rama into exile and made Bharata heir. Returning to find his father dead, he rebuked his mother, refused the throne, and went with the whole army to Chitrakuta to beg Rama to come back. When Rama would not break their father's word, Bharata took his sandals, set them on the throne, and ruled for fourteen years from the village of Nandigrama in Rama's name, dressed as an ascetic.
“I hold this throne for another. I will guard it all the more for that.”
