Gandhari
Who Gandhari is
Gandhari, princess of Gandhara and daughter of King Subala, bound her own eyes on learning that her husband Dhritarashtra was blind, choosing to share his darkness. Mother of a hundred sons and a daughter, Duhshala, she urged Duryodhana before the assembly to make peace, and when he asked her blessing on each day of the war, she would answer only that victory lies where dharma is. After the war she mourned on the field of Kurukshetra for the fallen of both sides, a figure of great ascetic power and great grief.
“I chose not to see, so as not to stand above my husband. Let us see what discipline can do.”
