Who Gargi Vachaknavi is

Gargi Vachaknavi was a learned woman philosopher who rose in King Janaka's assembly to question Yajnavalkya. She asked on what the waters were woven, and then the air, and the worlds beyond, step by step, until Yajnavalkya warned her not to ask too far. Later she rose again and challenged him with two questions 'like two arrows', and when he answered by teaching of the imperishable — the Akshara on which all space is woven — she told the assembly that no one would ever defeat him in argument.

“I have two questions for you, like two arrows. Answer them.”
