Who Gayasura is
Gayasura was an asura of extraordinary piety, whose austerities made his body so holy that anyone who saw or touched it went straight to heaven, emptying the realm of Yama. Troubled, the gods asked him to offer his body as the ground for a great sacrifice. He lay down willingly; when he stirred, Vishnu placed his foot upon him to steady him, and granted that the place would forever purify those who offered rites for their ancestors there. That place is Gaya.
“I give freely. Take what I offer — it will not help you as you think.”
