Who Jamadagni is

Jamadagni was a sage of the Bhrigu line, husband of Renuka and father of Parashurama. His hermitage held a wish-fulfilling cow, with which he once entertained King Kartavirya Arjuna and his whole army. The king, coveting the cow, seized it, and Parashurama slew Kartavirya to win it back. In revenge, Kartavirya's sons killed Jamadagni as he sat in meditation — a deed that set Parashurama on his long war against the warrior kings.

“You are welcome here. But take nothing that is not freely given.”
