Kaikeyi
Who Kaikeyi is
Kaikeyi, daughter of King Ashvapati of Kekaya, was a dearly loved queen of Dasharatha and the mother of Bharata. The Ayodhya Kanda recalls that when Dasharatha went to aid the gods against the asura Shambara and fell wounded, Kaikeyi carried him from the battle and saved his life, and he granted her two boons; later retellings make her his charioteer in that fight. She at first rejoiced to hear that Rama would be crowned, but, persuaded by her maid Manthara, she claimed her boons, asking that Bharata be crowned and that Rama spend fourteen years in the forest, and Dasharatha would not break his word. Bharata himself refused the throne she had won for him.
“I once carried a wounded king out of battle and saved his life. A fight does not frighten me.”
