Maitreyi
Who Maitreyi is
Maitreyi was a wife of the sage Yajnavalkya. When he prepared to leave the household for the life of a renunciate and offered to divide his wealth between his wives, Maitreyi asked whether all the wealth of the world would make her immortal. When he said no, she replied: 'What should I do with that which will not make me immortal? Tell me instead what you know.' Yajnavalkya then taught her that it is for the sake of the Self that husband, wife, children and wealth are dear.
“What use is material that does not last? I play for what endures.”
