Who Matanga is
Matanga was a sage whose hermitage lay near the lake of Pampa and the hill of Rishyamuka. When Vali, after slaying the buffalo-demon Dundubhi, flung its carcass so that blood fell on the hermitage, Matanga cursed him to die if he ever set foot on Rishyamuka — which is why the exiled Sugriva could take shelter there. His disciple Shabari served at the hermitage for many years, waiting for Rama as her teacher had foretold.
“Some ground is sacred. Step there at your peril.”
