Who Menaka is
Menaka was an apsara whom Indra sent to break the fierce austerities of the sage Vishvamitra, whose power had begun to alarm the gods. She succeeded: Vishvamitra lived with her for years, and she bore him a daughter. Menaka left the infant by the river Malini, where birds sheltered her until the sage Kanva found and raised her, naming her Shakuntala. Vishvamitra, ashamed of his distraction, returned to still harder penance.
“Look over here. What a beautiful move this is.”
