Who Shikhandi is
Born to Drupada as a daughter and raised as a son, Shikhandi is described in the Udyoga Parva as the rebirth of Amba, the princess who had vowed to bring about Bhishma's fall, and later became a man through an exchange with the yaksha Sthunakarna. Because Shikhandi had been born female, Bhishma would not raise his weapons against him. On the tenth day of the war Arjuna, fighting with Shikhandi before him, brought the grandsire down; Shikhandi himself fell on the night of Ashwatthama's raid on the Pandava camp.
“Some vows outlast a lifetime. I have carried mine a long way to this board.”
