Upamanyu
Who Upamanyu is
Upamanyu was a pupil of the sage Ayoda Dhaumya, who set him to tend the cows and forbade him, one by one, every way of feeding himself — alms, milk, even the froth from the calves' mouths. Starving, he ate leaves of the arka plant, went blind, and fell into a well. Dhaumya told him to pray to the Ashvins, who offered him a cake to restore his sight; Upamanyu refused to eat it without his teacher's permission. Pleased with his obedience, the Ashvins and his teacher blessed him with sight and all knowledge.
“I do exactly what I was taught. No shortcuts.”
