Who Urvashi is
Urvashi, the most celebrated of the apsaras of Indra's heaven, loved the mortal king Pururavas and lived with him on certain conditions, leaving him when they were broken — a story told as early as the Rigveda. Ages later, when Arjuna visited Indra's heaven to learn weapons, Urvashi came to him; he refused her, honouring her as a mother of his line. She cursed him to live a year without manhood — a curse that became his disguise as the dance teacher Brihannala in the court of Virata.
“Dance with me, mortal. But keep to my conditions.”
